State Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, launched his campaign for U.S. Senate on Tuesday evening before a crowd of more than 1,000 at Centennial Plaza in Round Rock.
Introduced by Round Rock City Councilwoman Hilda Montgomery and state Rep. John Bucy, D-Austin, the three-term legislator called for “a new kind of politics” and pledged to mount a challenge in a race where Democrats have not won statewide in more than three decades.
Talarico, 36, a former San Antonio middle school teacher and Harvard graduate, told supporters that his campaign had raised more than $1 million in its first 12 hours. He framed the contest as a fight against “billionaire mega donors” and spoke about unity across party and social divides.
The rally marked the first major campaign event for Talarico, who has gained national attention through viral speeches, appearances on cable news, and a July guest spot on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
Talarico will face retired astronaut Terry Virts and former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred in the Democratic primary next May. The winner is expected to meet either incumbent Sen. John Cornyn or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 2026 general election.
