The Leander City Council has approved a letter of intent with CenTex Sports for a sports and entertainment complex on about 40 acres of city-owned land at 204 Heritage Grove Road. The proposed development could represent a $100 million investment.
Under the proposal, CenTex Sports would buy the land and build the complex in two phases. The first phase would include more than 150,000 square feet of indoor sports facilities, a covered track, four beach volleyball courts and two soccer fields. The company anticipates investing $55 million in that phase.
First-phase construction must begin by Dec. 31, 2027, and be completed by Dec. 31, 2028, under the timeline outlined by the city. A second phase would add at least four baseball or softball fields and another soccer field. Construction of that phase must begin by Dec. 31, 2029, with completion by Dec. 31, 2030.
The letter of intent is a step toward a Chapter 380 economic development agreement that would set the city’s and developer’s commitments, including investment and construction milestones. The city said the agreement would include provisions to protect Leander if required commitments are not met.
Mayor Na’Cole Thompson said the complex could strengthen Leander’s role as a regional destination for sports and recreation. City Economic Development Director Randall Malik said tournaments could bring visitors to nearby restaurants, hotels and retailers.
CenTex Sports is a youth sports organization that offers leagues, camps, clinics and other athletic programs. The company said the proposed development would also include retail, dining, health and wellness offerings, meeting space and community events.
