Central Texas Philharmonic to accompany 1925 ‘Phantom of the Opera’ film live in Georgetown

The Central Texas Philharmonic will bring a silent-film classic to life this fall with a live orchestral performance accompanying the 1925 film “The Phantom of the Opera.”

The film will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Alma Thomas Theater, 1001 E. University Ave. in Georgetown.

The landmark adaptation stars Lon Chaney as the Phantom, a mysterious figure living beneath the Paris Opera House. The film combines gothic drama, romance and suspense and is remembered in particular for Chaney’s portrayal and elaborate makeup.

During the screening, the Central Texas Philharmonic will perform the score in real time, matching the music to the action unfolding on the theater’s screen.

Organizers said the combination will allow audiences to experience the film in a manner similar to moviegoers a century ago, when silent films were commonly accompanied by live musicians.

The event is part of the philharmonic’s upcoming season. Season tickets are available now, and purchasers can use the promotional code “SEASON10” for a 10% discount. Tickets are available through the Central Texas Philharmonic’s Ticket Tailor page.
