Hutto voters will decide whether to authorize $48 million in bonds for a new police headquarters in the Nov. 3 election.
Proposition A would finance a Justice Center with space for police administration, investigations, patrol operations, evidence storage and crime scene and laboratory functions.
Plans include a two-story main building and a separate support building for training and specialized operations. The project would also reserve space for a future dispatch center and infrastructure for emergency management functions.
The city says its Police Department has operated from its current station since 2002. That facility measures approximately 11,000 square feet. The proposed project would include a main building of about 45,000 square feet and an 8,000-square-foot support building.
If approved, the city anticipates repaying the bonds over 25 years and completing the Justice Center in 2029.
The city estimates the additional property tax cost at about $193.79 annually for a home valued at $335,073. Actual costs would depend on property values and financing terms.
The ballot identifies the proposal as a tax increase and would authorize taxes sufficient to repay the bonds and interest.
Hutto’s municipal election on the county’s November ballot concerns the bond proposal. No Hutto mayor or council candidate races appear on that ballot.
Early voting runs Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3, and the registration deadline is Oct. 5.
