What began with an Army family’s travels overseas, a love of cooking and a daughter nicknamed “Munch Munch” has grown into a Liberty Hill restaurant now celebrating four years in business.
Crystal and Bakaffa Casey, along with their daughter, Kennedy, are the family behind Munch Munch Waffles & More, a breakfast and brunch restaurant at 9073 W. State Highway 29, Suite 101.
The restaurant celebrated the fourth anniversary of its Liberty Hill location this month. The brick-and-mortar restaurant held its grand opening Sept. 2, 2022, after the business previously operated through pop-ups and a food truck.
The idea, however, began years earlier.
The Caseys trace their interest in waffles to 2015, when the Army family was stationed in Italy and traveled to Brussels, where they were introduced to Belgian waffles. After returning to the United States in 2017, the family eventually launched Munch Munch Waffles & More in 2019.
Crystal Casey said her love of cooking also developed during the family’s military years, when she cooked for military families and supported fundraisers. After the family moved to Washington, she continued cooking for friends before the family took the leap into operating its own food truck.
The restaurant’s name has an especially personal origin: “Munch Munch” is Crystal’s nickname for Kennedy. The family says the business was created in part to build a legacy for their daughter.
Four years after opening its permanent home in Liberty Hill, the restaurant has expanded beyond the sweet and savory waffles that inspired it. Its current menu includes chicken and waffles, Benedicts, omelets, biscuits, sandwiches, salads and other breakfast and brunch dishes, along with rotating seasonal offerings. The restaurant describes its food as combining Southern cuisine with European influences.
The Caseys have also continued experimenting with the concept through catering, seasonal menus, “Brunch with Munch” and a Munch After Dark Supper Club.
Community support has played a major role in the restaurant’s growth, the family said in an anniversary message thanking customers who followed the business from its food-truck days, visited the Liberty Hill restaurant or recommended it to friends and family.
“Whether you found us at the food truck, have been coming through our doors since we opened, recently discovered us, brought your family and friends, shared our posts or simply told someone, ‘You have to try Munch!’ — your support means more to our family than you know,” the Caseys wrote.
